The New York Knicks are currently the seventh seed in the East with a 5-5 record.
This is not nearly as good as fans had hoped but also not as bad as they had feared.
There have been moments of greatness with this New York team and certain players – like newcomer Jalen Brunson – are looking good.
But there is something that is very noticeable, and troubling, about the Knicks’ record so far.

The Knicks are 5-0 when it comes to teams below .500 and a painful 0-5 for teams above .500.
This means that New York is able to handle and defeat teams struggling but so far don’t have a chance against those who are playing well.
You don’t need to be an NBA expert to know that this will have to change if the Knicks wish to make the postseason.
New York State Of Mind
The Knicks promised fans that they would be much better than last season and would be again able to make the playoffs in 2022-23.
If the postseason started today, the Knicks would be able to barely squeeze in, and only if they did well in the play-in games.
The Knicks are better than they were last year, there is no doubt about that.
But they are a far way off from truly being excellent again.
The Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks, and Toronto Raptors are the Eastern Conference teams that are above .500 and, based on the stats above, the Knicks don’t have a way to beat them.
If they can’t take down teams like that, they can’t make the playoffs.
Right now, the Knicks are not a bad team…unless they are playing against a very good team.
