The Pittsburgh Steelers are shaking things up. Mike Tomlin’s team is gearing up for a crucial stretch of the season, and they don’t want to rest on their laurels.
With that in mind, they’ve chosen to make some seemingly minor moves that could actually have some major implications. They activated QB Will Howard to the active roster from the Reserved/Injured List, signed CB Asante Samuel Jr. to the practice squad, waived RB Trey Sermon from the active roster, and released DB Darrick Forrest from the practice squad.

Of course, the latter two transactions aren’t going to move the needle for the Steelers. The first two, however, might.
While Aaron Rodgers is going to continue to be the starting quarterback for as long as he’s out there and healthy, getting Will Howard back could be huge for the future. He’s projected to be a backup in the pros, but getting to learn from a future first-ballot Hall of Famer could work wonders for his development, and it’s not like this team will have many options once Rodgers retires.
As for Asante Samuel Jr., he might be one of the most underrated pickups of the season. The former second-round pick is finally cleared to play after dealing with a complicated injury, and he could give this underwhelming secondary a big boost. He still has some hurdles to clear and needs to be activated to the active roster, but if he’s healthy, it’s hard to imagine that won’t be the case pretty soon.
