The NFL’s trade deadline on Tuesday brought several notable transactions, but none created more buzz than the Indianapolis Colts‘ acquisition of cornerback Sauce Gardner from the New York Jets.
General manager Chris Ballard, known for his cautious approach during trade periods, identified an opportunity to bolster the secondary while the offense continues performing at an elite level.
Gardner wore the number 1 jersey throughout his time in New York, which immediately raised questions about how the Colts would handle the situation in Indianapolis.
Recent reports confirm that Gardner will keep his familiar number 1 jersey with his new team.

Wide receiver Josh Downs, who had worn number 1 for the past two and a half seasons, agreed to make the switch to number 2.
The change carries personal meaning for Downs, as his brother Caleb Downs also wears the number 2 at Ohio State University.
Gardner joins the Indianapolis Colts’ secondary for the remainder of the 2025 season and is expected to anchor the cornerback position long-term.
Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo now commands one of the league’s most formidable cornerback trios, pairing Gardner with Kenny Moore II and Charvarius Ward.
All three players have established themselves as top-tier defenders, creating significant challenges for opposing quarterbacks while giving the pass rush more time to generate pressure.
The addition strengthens an already improving defense that has found its rhythm under Anarumo’s system.
Gardner brings immediate credibility and production to Indianapolis after building an impressive resume in just three and a half seasons.
He has earned two Pro Bowl selections, two First-Team All-Pro honors, and the 2022 Defensive Rookie of the Year award during his brief career.
