It’s been a tale of two seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They got off to a red-hot start, but they haven’t been as proficient lately.
Of course, injuries have taken a toll on their ability to compete at the highest level, even though quarterback Baker Mayfield continues to put up big numbers. Their defense, however, hasn’t been as good.
That’s why analyst Ryan Clark isn’t so sure about them anymore and got honest about the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl hopes.
“The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as they are playing right now, aren’t Super Bowl threats at all. If Todd Bowles defensively can’t figure out a way to stop the big play, this team can’t compete with the top of the NFC,” Clark said.

The Buccaneers have given up too many explosive plays this season. As much as Mayfield can also sling the ball down the field, there’s only so much he can do after his defense constantly gives up big gains and scores.
Tampa Bay needs to figure out a way to dictate the pace of the game. If running back Bucky Irving is able to return from injury, the Bucs might be able to do so by pounding their way on the ground and keeping the opposing offense off the field.
Bowles is a defensive-minded coach, and the Bucs have usually had a disciplined unit. He should be able to turn things around.
Then again, the clock is ticking, and the NFC South is tighter than it was when they were getting away with some close wins earlier in the season. The Buccaneers still have a chance to make a postseason run, but they need to make adjustments right now.
