The Pittsburgh Steelers transitioned from Mitchell Trubisky to Kenny Pickett during their Week 4 game against the New York Jets.
It was an inevitable decision, considering the former Pitt Panther had a solid preseason.
Likewise, Trubisky was signed to a two-year deal in hopes of becoming a reliable quarterback to prepare Pickett for his eventual take-over.
The former North Carolina standout did have some modest success in the league by leading the Chicago Bears in multiple playoff appearances.
But against the Jets, head coach Mike Tomlin had seen enough, especially because Trubisky completed only seven passes out of 13 attempts for 84 yards and an interception.
Pickett’s debut could signify a new era for Steelers football.
Yet despite the excitement among the team’s faithful fans, Tomlin hasn’t confirmed the move of going with Pickett full-time.
#Steelers coach Mike Tomlin noncommittal at QB after benching Mitch Trubisky for Kenny Pickett.
"I thought we needed a spark, man. We didn’t do much in the first half, not enough offensively, and I thought he could provide a spark for us.
“We’ll deal with next week, next week.”

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero tweeted, “#Steelers coach Mike Tomlin noncommittal at QB after benching Mitch Trubisky for Kenny Pickett. ‘I thought we needed a spark, man. We didn’t do much in the first half, not enough offensively, and I thought he could provide a spark for us. We’ll deal with next week, next week.'”
Therefore, it will be important for Trubisky and Pickett to perform well during their practices to win the starting role in Week 5 against the Buffalo Bills.
Pickett Has The Momentum
It wasn’t a faultless performance by Pickett, though, because he threw three interceptions, including the game-winning pick by safety Lamarcus Joyner off a Hail Mary pass attempt.
However, Pickett completed ten throws out of 13 attempts for 120 yards.
He also rushed for two rushing touchdowns, making him the first quarterback in NFL history to have multiple rushing touchdowns in his debut.
It will be a long week for Tomlin as he finalizes his decision on which play-caller will face Josh Allen.
