NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo tweeted, “#Steelers S Minkah Fitzpatrick is in the concussion protocol, according to Mike Tomlin. Says Fitzpatrick got assessed after the game against the #Browns.”
If that’s the case, Fitzpatrick must clear a five-step process before getting cleared for full practice.
The Steelers lost to the Browns in Week 3, 29-17.
Fitzpatrick has 24 tackles, two interceptions, and two passes defended in three games.
The former Alabama standout has been one of Pittsburgh’s bright spots in their secondary ever since he joined the squad in 2019.
Since then, he has become a two-time First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl member.
The Steelers also rewarded him with a four-year, $73.6 million extension during the offseason.
His $18.247 million annual average value makes him the second-highest-paid safety in the league behind Derwin James‘ $19.1 million.
That contract makes him a Steeler until 2026, when he is already 30 years old.
The Miami Dolphins selected Fitzpatrick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
He stayed there for two seasons before getting traded to the Steelers.
In return, the Dolphins received a 2020 first-rounder, 2020 fifth-rounder, and 2021 sixth-rounder.
Meanwhile, the Steelers also traded their 2020 fourth-rounder and 2021 seventh-rounder with Fitzpatrick.
He had his best year last season with 84 solo tackles, seven passes defended, and two interceptions.
Other Injured Players For Pittsburgh
Aside from Fitzpatrick, safeties Carlins Platel and Karl Joseph are on injured reserve.
Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon is also questionable for Week 4.
Meanwhile, reigning Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt is still out due to a torn pectoral muscle.
On the other hand, Jeremy McNichols, Calvin Austin III, and Anthony Miller are all on injured reserve.
