The New York Giants were one of the surprise teams in the 2022 campaign as they were competitive on a weekly basis and even made the Wild Card Round of the playoffs where they lost to the eventual NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles.
Under head coach Brian Daboll, the Giants were a much better offensive team while the defense was solid throughout the year.
However, New York has a long way to go until they get back to the same levels of success they had when Eli Manning was still under center.
Daniel Jones has been up and down during his career so far, but no one expected him to live up to the same standard that Manning set during his time with the Giants.
Manning was able to keep New York in the playoff hunt for most of his tenure and part of his success was his even-keeled nature.
In fact, Manning’s former teammate Victor Cruz revealed that the quarterback never ran his mouth on the field via The Carton Show.
“Eli Manning never really talked trash, but we talked all of it for him,” Cruz said. “Our OL was doing most of it.”
.@TeamVic: Eli Manning never really talked trash, but we talked all of it for him. Our OL was doing most of it.🗣
@CRO31: Philip Rivers was the best QB trash talker. The Denver game in '08, he went to town on Jay Cutler. I wish we had clips of that! pic.twitter.com/IMbvFRkahm— The Carton Show (@TheCartonShow) August 30, 2023
Manning doesn’t have a very fiery or loud personality, so Cruz’s comments make sense.
Those Giants squads were definitely animated and loved to talk, so perhaps it was easier for Manning to sit back and do his job.
New York’s got a good roster on paper and hopefully they’ll be able to talk a little bit of trash themselves when the 2023 season starts.
