The New York Jets were the main characters at the 2025 NFL trade deadline as they made a pair of surprising blockbuster moves, sending star cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts for Adonai Mitchell and a pair of first-round picks, while also shipping defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys for a first and a second-round pick.
While the moves were surprising, they make sense since the Jets are just 1-7 and going nowhere fast, and one former scout added their two cents about why the Jets made these moves.
Former team scout Daniel Kelly on X shared their insight into what the Jets were thinking, and they said it is due to a shift in organizational philosophy.
“The Jets team philosophy is now offensive. That’s what the trades tell me. That’s why the Jets pushed to have wide receiver Adonai Mitchell included in the trade with the Colts and that’s why the Jets traded away two of the best young defensive players in the league. That’s also why the Jets refused to trade running back Breece Hall and wide receiver Garrett Wilson. The refusal to move these two players in particular confirms the organizational philosophy shift in my mind. This isn’t a “fire sale,” this is an organizational shift in philosophy,” Kelly posted on X.

The Jets have been a defense-first team for years, and it’s possible that it wasn’t by choice as the organization keeps bringing in the wrong quarterback year after year, with Geno Smith, Sam Darnold, Christian Hackenberg, Zach Wilson, Joe Flacco, Aaron Rodgers, Justin Fields, and others proving one after another that they aren’t the guy to lead this team to contention.
Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson’s names surfaced in quite a few trade rumors in recent weeks, so it’s a great point to note that the team opted to keep them while dealing a pair of defensive stars.
On paper, this could be a strong offense if it can find the right quarterback, perhaps atop the 2025 NFL draft if the Jets continue losing and can obtain the first overall pick.
As great as Gardner and Williams are, they weren’t getting this team out of the mud, whereas an exciting young quarterback could do just that.
Perhaps Kelly is onto something here.
