Analyst Says Dan Campbell Was ‘Atrocious’ Against Eagles

The Detroit Lions were too aggressive for their own good in Week 11. Unfortunately, that wasn’t a fluke.

Head coach Dan Campbell has the utmost confidence in his offense. While that makes sense to a degree, he’s also too aggressive at times.

Analyst John Middlekauff said Campbell was “atrocious” in the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I thought Dan Campbell was atrocious tonight. I don’t think there’s any way around it. Like, he was reckless. Going for it on fourth down is something that is supported in football now, and most of us are behind it. But there’s also a line of like, this is a defensive game and sometimes field position in a game that is 13-6, you don’t always need to go for it on fourth down. You’re not playing the Eagles of last year. Rough night for Dan Campbell,” Middlekauff said.

The Lions had trouble moving the ball against the Eagles’ stout front seven. Yet, Campbell continued to challenge them in crucial situations, going empty-handed in a game that was never out of reach.

This isn’t the first time this has happened to the Lions under Campbell. Judging by his character and approach to the game, it won’t be the last, either.

There’s a reason teams don’t always go for it on fourth down. Sometimes, it’s OK to just take the points instead of swinging for the fences at every opportunity.

Detroit lost what could be a preview of the NFC Championship Game. Philadelphia head coach Nick Sirianni and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio coached circles around Campbell this time.

The Lions clearly have the talent to go toe-to-toe with anybody. That doesn’t mean they should approach every game as if they were playing “Madden” at home with their friends.
