The landscape of the NFL has changed a lot over the past several years, especially as it relates to contracts for big-name players.
When it comes time to get extended, more and more players are looking to either break a record for being the highest-paid player in history or, at the very least, get close to that number.
This negotiating strategy has worked well for some athletes and not so much for others; it often depends on what their front office is looking to spend.
Ja’Marr Chase, for instance, received a contract earlier this offseason to become the highest-paid WR in history, but his track record seemed to warrant that large of a deal.
It will be interesting to see if the Washington Commanders value Terry McLaurin like this, as it appears that he’s looking to get a record-breaking deal.
Dov Kleiman highlighted on X that McLaurin would like to earn “considerably more” than DK Metcalf, whose current contract has an average annual value of $33 million.

McLaurin had a great season in 2024, his first with Jayden Daniels, but he hasn’t had elite production for a sustained amount of time like Chase or Justin Jefferson.
With that in mind, the Commanders will have to weigh their options.
McLaurin doesn’t seem to be budging on this total, so if the team can’t negotiate him down, they could reach an impasse sooner rather than later.
A rift between a player and the front office is the last thing a team like the Commanders wants, as they have a lot of traction and steam heading into the 2025 campaign.
