Conventional wisdom has it that the San Francisco 49ers should stick with Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback.
The players in the locker room like him and he did enough to lead them to the NFC Championship Game.
However, their defeat in the game might have turned out to be a blessing in disguise for their front office.
If not, there would be a clamor to stick with Garoppolo if he led them to another Super Bowl appearance.
But that scenario won’t happen as the veteran quarterback will be on the trading block.
When that happens, North Dakota State’s Trey Lance will take over after a widely uneventful rookie season.
Even if Garoppolo is still part of the team, the hype for Lance has started, as shared by Pro Football Focus.

PFF quoted 49ers general manager John Lynch saying about Lance: “I think he’s just got that makeup that the great ones do… But he’s gonna get his chance to go show that.”
It’s definite that he will get more reps from under center soon.
The team is riding their future on him, especially because they gave up a lot to draft him.
A Huge Price To Pay
The asking price for the pick that landed Lance isn’t cheap.
In exchange for the Miami Dolphins’ third overall selection, the 49ers gave away their first-rounders in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 drafts.
San Francisco also sent Miami an additional third-round selection in the 2022 draft.
That’s four potential high-impact players in exchange for who they think will be their franchise quarterback.
Lance had 603 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions in his rookie year.
But in some ways, Lance fits the 49ers’ offense better than Garoppolo.
On that note, they are hoping that their high-stakes gamble will pay off.
