The Los Angeles Chargers have a stacked team.
They’ve added solid weapons on both sides of the field, and with a proven winner like Jim Harbaugh, they should be a contender this season.
Nevertheless, Ryan Clark isn’t so sure about Justin Herbert.
Discussing on ESPN’s First Take, the former player questioned Herbert’s clutch gene, stating that he has been “terrible” when it matters most.
“Justin Herbert, whenever it matters, has been terrible. Justin Herbert didn’t win big games in college as talented as he was. Justin Herbert, in two games in the playoffs, you lose a 27-0 lead. You throw four interceptions against the Texans. I think Justin Herbert is extremely talented. I also think Justin Herbert is the fun friend. Justin Herbert is the friend you invite over when you’re having a party. If something serious is happening, you don’t bring him over because he’s not responsible, accountable, and you can’t depend on him,” Clark said.

Unfortunately for the Chargers, the numbers back up that claim.
Then again, it’s also worth noting that Herbert has spent most of his career under Brandon Staley’s tutelage, and he also left plenty to be desired in big moments.
Now, the time for excuses is running out.
With Harbaugh and Greg Roman leading the way, the Chargers will deploy a run-heavy offense that will take most of the pressure off Herbert’s shoulders.
He will also have two reliable pass-catchers in the likes of Keenan Allen and Ladd McConkey.
He’s been in the league long enough to prove whether he’s got it or not, and while it’s certainly looked like he’s got the talent and physical tools to be elite, he has yet to take a leap.
This might be the season he finally takes a step forward and lives up to the sky-high expectations around him.
Herbert is a privileged athlete with a strong arm, and he’s made some big plays in his career.
But after his shortcomings, it’ll be hard to give him the benefit of the doubt if this season proves to be more of the same.
