The Los Angeles Chargers’ quarterback legacy runs deep with names like Dan Fouts and Philip Rivers, yet Super Bowl glory has remained elusive.
Now, Justin Herbert appears to be walking a similar path. Even with Jim Harbaugh replacing Brandon Staley at the helm, bringing a sense of stability, familiar challenges continue to haunt the team.
This was particularly evident when Herbert and the Chargers fell short against the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round.
The parallel between Herbert and Rivers caught the attention of former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III, who shared his thoughts on “The Dan Patrick Show.”
“Justin Herbert is Philip Rivers. That’s what he is right now,” Griffin stated, drawing a striking comparison between the two signal-callers.

Griffin went deeper into this comparison, suggesting Herbert could follow Rivers’ career trajectory without significant changes.
While Rivers carved out an impressive NFL career with consistent performances, he never achieved the playoff success that defined legends like Peyton Manning.
Herbert’s journey has been marked by constant change – three head coaches and four offensive coordinators – leading many to point fingers at his surrounding circumstances for playoff shortcomings.
“Herbert is now in that realm where he’s going to make a decision, is he going to be Philip Rivers, or is he going to be able to turn the corner and be a Peyton Manning type?” Griffin pondered.
The former NFL quarterback didn’t hold back, emphasizing that Herbert needs to step up in crucial moments, regardless of external factors.
Griffin acknowledged Herbert’s undeniable talent but pointed out that quarterback accountability should be consistent across the board, much like it has been for Lamar Jackson and Dak Prescott.
