The San Francisco 49ers have a quarterback controversy on their hands entering the 2023 season.
They have three options in the building and any one of them could be the Week 1 starter.
Veteran Sam Darnold, second-year player Brock Purdy, and third-year player Trey Lance are the options.
Many people believe this job will be between Purdy and Lance.
Both are 49ers draft picks and players that have yet to truly show what they can do in the league.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan seems to believe each of these QBs could be their starter.
According to Dov Kleiman, via David Lombardi, Shanahan said all three quarterbacks are “franchise-like QBs.”

While we are unsure what to expect from Lance and Purdy for a full season, we know Darnold is not it.
The former first-round pick has had plenty of chances to be a franchise quarterback and has repeatedly failed.

But, Lance and Purdy could both turn into very good quarterbacks.

Yet, some fans think this is wishful thinking on the part of Shanahan.
Maybe none of these quarterbacks will ever be a franchise-changer.

Lance has only been given four NFL starts in his career.
Last season he got injured in Week 2 and missed the remainder of the year.
No one knows what he could turn into with a full season of health.
Many 49ers fans are grateful for what Purdy did as a backup last season.
They think he deserves the starting job for this upcoming year.

It will be interesting to see what the 49ers decide to do at quarterback.
A strong QB is all they are missing from being true Super Bowl contenders.
