Deebo Samuel was a huge part of the San Francisco 49ers‘ success last season, bringing them to the NFC Championship Game.
While the South Carolina alumnus is primarily a wide receiver, former offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel used him effectively in their run game.
In 16 games played, he averaged 6.2 yards per carry and collected eight rushing touchdowns.
But he made most of his damage in the passing game with 77 receptions, 1,405 yards, and six scores.
His versatility makes it necessary for the Niners to give him a contract extension.
Regarding that matter, Samuel will be using his leverage to get a more lucrative deal, as The Athletic’s David Lombardi reported.

Lombardi tweeted, “Deebo Samuel reportedly won’t participate in the on-field component of OTAs without a new contract, as was generally expected, but it’ll be interesting to see if he reports for off-field activities.”
Samuel will be receiving a base salary of $3.9 million in 2022.
Unfortunately, San Francisco cannot exercise a fifth-year option on him because he was drafted in the second round.
Giving him the franchise tag also amounts to a one-year, expensive rental.
Therefore, there’s a possibility that they might lose him to free agency next season if they don’t come to terms on a new deal.
Samuel Trying To Get His Money
It was a breakout year for Samuel last season after having 1,193 receiving yards in his first two seasons.
Likewise, the surging wide receiver market makes his camp think that the now is the perfect opportunity to sign a huge contract.
Tyreek Hill established a new ceiling with his four-year, $120 million deal with the Miami Dolphins.
Meanwhile, Davante Adams signed a five-year, $141 million contract to join the Las Vegas Raiders.
Samuel is trying to get an annual average value close to what Hill and Adams will get.
Thus, he is using his advantage to get a long-term extension.
