As things stand now, the Green Bay Packers are the betting favorites to win the NFC North.
That is likely based on their season-opening win against the Detroit Lions more than anything else.
However, Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report recently said he believes Green Bay isn’t the actual favorite over Detroit in the division.
“The Packers are good pretty much everywhere but great pretty much nowhere, while the Lions continue to have a higher ceiling on offense. Detroit has outscored its opponents by 9.1 points per game, compared to just 5.5 points for Green Bay. The Bears and Vikings are both at least a year away with negative scoring margins (Chicago) or non-winning records and quarterback questions (Minnesota). The Lions don’t have the tiebreaker with Green Bay right now, but that could change when they host the Packers next month. They survived the early-season growing pains associated with losing both coordinators and now appear destined to overtake their rivals in the second half of the season,” Gagnon wrote.
The Lions didn’t look sharp in their road loss to the Packers, and there were some major concerns about their offense.
Fast forward to today, and new offensive coordinator John Morton may have people forgetting about Ben Johnson.
The same goes for Kelvin Sheppard as Aaron Glenn’s replacement as defensive coordinator.
The Lions have one of the most stacked rosters in the league, and head coach Dan Campbell always seems to have them ready to play.
The Packers are also loaded with talent, but there are some questions surrounding head coach Matt LaFleur’s situational play calling and decision-making.
Whatever the case, one thing seems to be sure: Neither the Bears nor the Vikings seems to be on the same level as their two other rivals.
There’s still plenty of football left to be played this season, but barring a shocking turn of events, it’s likely the Lions or the Packers will finish atop the division.
