One of MLB’s coolest traditions is Old Timers’ Day.
During the event, a specific team devotes a pregame ceremony to honor retired players who contributed to the franchise in the past.
Sometimes, Old Timers’ Day becomes an Old Timers’ Game, as these players take the field and have a good time playing ball.
Those games are much shorter than your average nine-inning game and is a way for teams to honor the stars of yesterday.
The New York Yankees are the only squad that consistently hosts an Old Timers’ Day year after year, but other teams have done it in the past.
For example, the New York Mets will have their own edition this season, with some of the 1986 World Series champions.
The Yankees Announced Plans For This Year’s Old Timers’ Day
The Yankees, however, will have a different version of Old Timers’ Day this year.
“FYI: The traditional Old-Timers’ Day game will NOT be played this season. Instead, there will be introductions and video tributes,” MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch tweeted.
The event is scheduled for July 30, and it will include some of the best players in Yankees’ history.

For example, relief pitcher Mariano Rivera, the only player to be inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame unanimously, will be there.
The “Louisiana Lightning”, Ron Guidry, will be in attendance, too.
Current manager Aaron Boone, Tino Martinez, Charlie Hayes, David Cone, Bucky Dent, and Bernie Williams (part of the late-90s dynasty) won’t miss the event, either.
In short, while Yankees fans won’t be able to see them taking the field for three innings like it usually happens, they will get to greet and cheer for some of the Yanks’ best players in history.
