The story of Carson Wentz and his time in the NFL is becoming one of disappointment.
While his move to the Washington Commanders was something that could have been promising, it’s seeing him currently on the bench.
However, his benching wasn’t over poor play.
What started the disaster for him was an injury.
Now that the Commanders are winning games with Taylor Heinicke, some wonder if Wentz’s time as a starting quarterback is over.
But is his career as a starting quarterback in the NFL done for, or can he redeem himself?
Wentz’s Future As A Starter Hangs On Several Components
If you look at the statistics of Wentz throughout his career, you can find some success from him.
However, that success was in his early years as a starting quarterback.
While his season with the Indianapolis Colts last year wasn’t awful, he didn’t perform well in critical games for the team.
With him showing some success, what keeps him from returning as the starting quarterback?
The first thing is how Heinicke is doing just enough to help the Commanders win games.
This is something the veteran quarterback wasn’t doing when he was the signal caller.
However, there is a second factor, at least during this season, which might keep Wentz on the bench.

In the trade for Wentz, the Colts get a higher draft pick from the Commanders if he plays at least 70% of the snaps this season.
With draft compensation on the line, the Commanders might opt to keep him off the field to prevent giving up a second-round pick.
If this happens, he might never see the field as a starting quarterback ever again.
