It was a night to forget for the Chicago White Sox on Monday.
Things were humming along just fine in the top of the ninth, until they weren’t.
The Cleveland Guardians began chipping away at an 8-2 deficit and turned the game on its ear when Josh Naylor tied the game with a grand slam.
The game went into extra innings, with the White Sox showing a little life after falling behind in the top of the tenth, tying it up in the bottom half.
But Naylor put a dagger in their hearts again with a three-run homer that put Cleveland ahead, 12-9.
The Sox’s epic collapse was one for the ages, especially considering that the Guardians were 1-626 in the last 40 seasons when trailing by six or more runs in the ninth inning.

An Epic Collapse
This is about as bad as it gets for the White Sox.
They had the Guardians by the scruff of the neck in last night’s game, only for them to squander the lead and suffer a horrific loss.
But what a tough way to lose for the White Sox.
They had it in the bag and let it slip away.
And the fact that the Guardians had only come back from six or more runs down in the ninth inning once in the last 40 years makes this that much more difficult to swallow for the White Sox.
Usually, being down by that much that late is a death sentence.
But the White Sox couldn’t hold on, as they now sit with the burden of such a major collapse.
