When it rains, it pours for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The ever-struggling franchise wanted to build from last year’s surprising trip to the playoffs by adding Rudy Gobert to their promising core, but that has done little to improve things.
If anything, the Timberwolves are a much worse team this year than they were last season, and they don’t even have the draft picks anymore.
Moreover, D’Angelo Russell‘s future with the team seems bleak.
He was terrible for them in the playoffs and has been fairly inconsistent this season, prompting speculation about a potential demotion to the second unit or even a trade:
“In Minnesota, where the Wolves have lost six of seven and haven’t gotten consistent efforts from Russell, there’s speculation that Russell could find himself a spot on the bench to help jumpstart the offense and defense,” reported Fan Nation’s Sam Navarro. “Trade rumors have loomed over Russell’s head for a long time. Last summer, a report from The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor said the Wolves were ‘shopping’ Russell.”
Whatever the case, the former second-overall pick has made it clear that he’s not comfortable in the Twin Cities right now.
He recently retweeted a 2016 tweet from Fred VanVleet saying ‘bet on yourself’ and stopped following the Timberwolves on social media, fueling even more speculation.

That doesn’t bode well, all things considered, as the team could find themselves as sellers at the trade deadline after a disappointing campaign, and it’s not like Russell’s trade value is exactly high at this time.
