It was a hopeless situation in the bottom of the ninth inning on Wednesday night when the St. Louis Cardinals trailed the Washington Nationals, 5-1.
After the usually sharp Giovanny Gallegos had a blowup outing, the Cards were down to their final three outs.
But they began to chip away in the bottom half of the ninth, getting two men on for Nolan Arenado, who hit a ground-rule double to make it 5-2.
A run scored on a groundout by Corey Dickerson and Yadier Molina drove in one with the Cards down to their last out.
Then, Tommy Edman hit one just out of the reach of Nats’ outfielder Alex Call to score two runs and finish off an improbable comeback win for the Cards.

Comeback Cards
The Comeback Cardinals strike again.
They’ve been coming back late and games to pull off some magic.
They’ve faced some sizable deficits that they ended up overcoming.
This is further proof that they are a dangerous team that should not be counted out at any point.
With their win, they increased their lead in the National League Central to a commanding 9.5 games, dropping their magic number to clinch the division down to 17.
This is a team that is battle tested and ready to do some damage in the postseason.
Last year, it took a 17-game winning streak to even get there.
This time, the Cardinals have built up a huge lead in the Central division and look ready to cap off the legendary careers of Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, and Adam Wainwright with a deep run into October for the first time since 2019.
The Cardinals never quit, even in the face of adversity, and that will make them a tough opponent in the postseason.
