Rapoport tweeted, “The Saints are making a key post-draft addition, as they’re expected to sign All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu, sources say. A long-awaited signing that should be finalized in the coming days, the Honey Badger lands in a perfect spot.”
There had been speculation that the 29-year-old defensive back would join his favorite team after the Kansas City Chiefs allowed him to walk away.
The three-time Pro Bowler will bring his tenacious defense that allowed him to finish with 60 solo tackles, six passes defended, three interceptions, and a sack.
This signing will be extra special for Mathieu who was born and raised in The Big Easy.
He did not leave his home state for college, opting to play for Louisiana State University.
His attachment with the team as an NFL fan is so profound that he had an emotional tweet for when Drew Brees retired.
However, Mathieu is following his idol’s footsteps by building on his legacy.
Aside from four All-Pro selections, he also won Super Bowl LIV with the Chiefs.
A Loaded Saints Secondary
With defensive-minded coach Dennis Allen at the helm, the Saints are looking to shut down their opponents’ passing game next season.
Mathieu will join a stacked rotation that has Marcus Maye, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Daniel Sorensen on the depth chart.
The Saints also have Paulson Adebo and 2017 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Marshon Lattimore starting at cornerback.
Inserting “Honey Badger” into the mix should put New Orleans among the top ten teams in terms of passing yards allowed in 2022.
Likewise, they also get another veteran who will impart football wisdom upon their younger players.
