Next season, Trey Lance will be the San Francisco 49ers‘ starter, even if Jimmy Garoppolo is still with the team.
The team hoped to trade Garoppolo sooner than later, but the surgery on his shoulder might have turned off potential buyers.
Likewise, Garoppolo’s limitations during the 2021 postseason shrunk the market.
Therefore, there could be a possibility for the 49ers to have a costly backup.
Even then, head coach Kyle Shanahan has given Lance the keys to the program.
After all, trading up for the North Dakota State alumnus would be a waste of resources if they don’t intend to play him.
In last year’s draft, the Niners traded four picks to move up to number three and select Lance after Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson.
In return, the Miami Dolphins got San Francisco’s first-round picks in 2021, 2022, and 2023, plus a 2022 third-rounder.
The massive haul that the 49ers surrendered means they have high hopes for Lance.
That said, it seems like the second-year player already received the George Kittle seal of approval.

In a recent guesting in the I Am Athlete Podcast, the All-Pro tight end shared that Lance reminds him of Josh Allen.
High Praise From Kittle
Kittle’s statement is both a confidence booster and a challenge.
Lance played in only six games last season and hasn’t shown much.
Even then, one of the team’s leaders is vouching for him, which should improve his morale.
Likewise, that praise is also a challenge for Lance as he leads the 49ers.
Last year, the team had a fantastic run that ended in the NFC Championship Game.
They are hoping that Lance is the man that could take them further and possibly win a Super Bowl.
