With Lars Nootbaar nursing a back injury and both Dylan Carlson and Tyler O’Neill currently on the injured list, the St. Louis Cardinals were forced to get creative with their outfield on Tuesday night for their game against the Kansas City Royals.
Fortunately, they have several players who could fill those roles, one of which is super utilityman Tommy Edman.
Edman is currently the team’s everyday second baseman.
However, his versatility allows him to play multiple positions, including center field.
That’s where the Cardinals star got the start on Tuesday.
On Twitter, Bally Sports Midwest, the TV home of the Cardinals, posted a video of Edman taking reps at center field and learning from one of the best in Cards legend Willie McGee.

McGee currently serves as a member of the coaching staff.
Edman is versatile enough to be able to play all three outfield positions and all four infield positions.
Center field is obviously not his natural position.
However, it’s one he can play quite well.
And with McGee’s instruction and guidance, Edman learned quickly.
The video shows McGee and Edman discussing the direction the ball could go and where the latter would need to run in order to track it down, as well as how to play certain hitters in the Royals lineup.
In addition to Edman out in center field, Brendan Donovan, St. Louis’ other super utilityman, got the start in right field.
Both are former Gold Glove winners and are versatile assets on the Cardinals roster.
