The days in which the New York Yankees had the best record in baseball and looked unbeatable are long gone.
In fact, they have been among the worst teams in the American League for a while now, and if it wasn’t for the huge division lead they built in the first half and the inconsistent play of the teams behind them in the AL East, their presence in the postseason would be in serious danger right now.
After peaking in June, the Yankees have been progressively getting worse every month.
“#Yankees record by month this season: April: 15-6 (.714); May: 19-9 (.679); June: 22-6 (.786); July: 13-13 (.500); August: 4-12 (.250),” SI.com’s Max Goodman tweeted.

The numbers don’t lie: the Yankees were at the top of the world on June, but since July, they have been bad: not mediocre; downright bad.
The Yankees’ Problems Go Beyond Injuries
Yes, they have suffered injuries: Aroldis Chapman, Giancarlo Stanton, Luis Severino, Michael King, Chad Green, Harrison Bader, Matt Carpenter, Jonathan Loaisiga, and other prominent players either have visited the injured list or are currently on it.
Green and King are lost for the season; while quality relievers such as Stephen Ridings and Zack Britton haven’t even been able to play at all this year.
However, good teams find a way to cope with injury crisis: the Los Angeles Dodgers, for example, have managed a similar situation swiftly.
Why?
Because they have a deep farm and confidence to translate their talent to the big leagues.
Oh, and they don’t fear any service time implications.
Sometimes, it seems like some of the best players in the Yankees organization (current examples are Clarke Schmidt and Oswald Peraza, and Ron Marinaccio until recently) are in Triple-A and not in the majors, where they belong.
The Yankees have work to do to get back to the powerhouse they were early in the season.
