Their ability to close out and build huge leads late in games was one of the biggest reasons behind the Golden State Warriors recent success.
Their starters barely played in fourth quarters after running away with the game shortly after halftime, allowing them to stay fresh for their next game.
However, that doesn’t seem to be the case when the game goes down to the wire, and they have to play an extra five minutes to get the job done.
As Talkin’ NBA recently pointed out, the Warriors actually have the league’s worst overtime record in the past five years, winning just 2 of 17 matchups.
Worst record in overtime (Last 5 seasons):
Warriors: 2-15
Hornets: 5-20
Magic: 4-10
Pelicans: 8-16 pic.twitter.com/w5is22IXSR— 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧' 𝐍𝐁𝐀 (@_Talkin_NBA) February 2, 2023
The Dubs are followed by the Charlotte Hornets (5-20), Orlando Magic (4-10), and New Orleans Pelicans (8-16) as the worst overtime teams in the league over that span.
That was again at a full display last night when they couldn’t rally past the Minnesota Timberwolves and headed back home with a five-point loss.
Perhaps it is the fatigue, or maybe it is the fact that most of their overtime games have come on the road.
Maybe, Steve Kerr has failed to make timely adjustments to prevent his team from choking or teams from figuring their offense out late in games.
Regardless of the reason, this is a shocking stat by the Dubs, even if they spent two seasons struggling and out of the playoffs.
But hey, even with their flaws, the Warriors are the last team you want to meet come playoff time, so you better don’t sleep on them.
