Even when they win, the Houston Texans lose.
Lovie Smith’s head-scratching decision to go for the win in his divisional matchup vs. the Indianapolis Colts cost the organization of the first-overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Moreover, that pick, which is expected to be used to get a quarterback, could’ve been just what the team needed to finally turn things around and straighten the ship.
Some speculate that it was Smith’s premature revenge, as he knew he was going to be fired anyways.
However, he reportedly expected to be back next season:
“A couple things, and that’s all I’m going to say about that,” Smith said postgame. “First off, there are reports. I don’t know what the reports are. . . Do I expect to be back? Yeah, I expect to be back. Absolutely.”
Others believe that it was Smith’s way of helping his former team, the Chicago Bears.
With that 3-13-1 record, the Texans pretty much gave away the first pick to the Bears, and the NFL Draft order is now officially settled for the top-10 picks.

Now, the Bears will have a tough choice to make as they will make the first selection in the Draft for the first time in 76 years.
Will they use the pick to land a QB and ship Justin Fields somewhere else? Will they use the pick to address another position? Or will they trade that pick?
Fields showed great improvement in his sophomore season, but some still question if he’s the right guy to lead them going forward.
Whatever the case, that’s a great problem to have.
