The Pittsburgh Steelers turned heads with their quarterback depth chart before Week 1 of the 2022 season.
After all, their loyal fans couldn’t believe that rookie Kenny Pickett was third behind Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph.
Being in that spot limits his chances of getting reps with the scout team.
He did push Trubisky for the starting role, but common sense dictates that the play-caller with experience gets the starting role.
However, the Steelers faithful couldn’t understand Pickett’s spot behind Rudolph even if he had a better preseason.
93.7 The Fan host Collin Dunlap criticized the decision by tweeting, “Trubisky should be QB1. But having Kenny Pickett third on the depth chart is gross roster mismanagement. He won’t get reps as scout QB to develop at the proper rate, and, also, how in the world is a guy you take in 1st round in street clothes on game day? Gross roster mismanagement.”
The stern opposition worked after the Steelers changed their play-caller depth chart.
Kenny Pickett now ahead of Mason Rudolph. This was the plan for the #Steelers coming in. Nothing changed from yesterday. Sounds like wires got crossed is all. https://t.co/JFOJRBKXYM

NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo tweeted, “Kenny Pickett now ahead of Mason Rudolph. This was the plan for the #Steelers coming in. Nothing changed from yesterday. Sounds like wires got crossed, is all.”
He also quoted a post from Steelers Senior Director of Communications Burt Lauten, who said, “Updated #Steelers Depth Chart for Week 1 at CIN. HC Mike Tomlin will address this version as well as other depth chart positions (previously announced) during his Noon press conference today. It will be streamed live on http://Steelers.com & on all of the team’s platforms.”
Pickett Is Next In Line
Things are now in the right order after Pickett is second on the depth chart.
Trubisky will have an opportunity to lead the Steelers after signing a two-year deal.
Head coach Mike Tomlin would like to see what they have with Trubisky.
Pickett will take over if he doesn’t live up to expectations.
Anything less than a playoff berth could shake things up at quarterback for Pittsburgh.
If they are out of the race, they might give Pickett an opportunity to start and gain some confidence.
