There’s still reason for the Carolina Panthers to celebrate after pulling off the Baker Mayfield trade.
With Sam Darnold as their top choice at quarterback, Mayfield will turn out to be the better option.
In terms of work ethic, Mayfield doesn’t make excuses for playing hurt or going through rigid practices.
Likewise, he has led the Cleveland Browns to the playoffs once.
Mayfield’s overall game is miles ahead of Darnold and that’s why he will likely win the starting role.
However, it isn’t sure whether Mayfield is the best long-term solution for the Panthers at quarterback.
He does have limitations that could ultimately lead to failure.
Worst yet, the talent level around him is shallow which is not good for lofty expectations.
If the Panthers have another losing season in 2022, head coach Matt Rhule might be fired and Mayfield may not get an extension.
Instead, the Panthers will move on by selecting another quarterback in next year’s draft, especially if Matt Corral doesn’t pan out.
But while Mayfield is with the team, they are already coming up with witty uses for his name.

The Panthers’ official Twitter account shared a photo of Mayfield wearing a baker’s attire with the caption “Bake at 704.”
That number is one of two area codes for Charlotte, North Carolina where the Panthers are based.
Aside from 704, Charlotte also uses 980 as part of Mecklenburg County.
Will Mayfield And The Panthers Bake Good Fortune In 2022?
Even if Mayfield rediscovers his 2020 form, it’s difficult to see the Panthers playing beyond the regular season.
In fact, they might have another campaign with double-digit losses.
The moves they’ve made this offseason were not convincing enough to bet on them turning the tide.
Therefore, Panthers fans may have to endure another long season even with yet another change at quarterback during the Rhule era.
