The Baltimore Orioles are starting to become competitive, which is excellent news for an avid, loyal fan base that has had to endure lots of mediocre years.
After several seasons with a losing record, they were 83-79 in 2022 and have the foundation that invites supporters to dream.
As an organization, they understand that having a proper stadium is just as important as putting together a competitive on-field product.
They have played at Camden Yards for 30 years, but want to make sure the park is comfortable, big, and has a lot of interesting things to offer to fans.
They were facing decision time regarding the lease of the park, but this week they rejected a Camden Yards extension and will join Maryland’s governor in pushing to revamp the stadium district.
Per ESPN, “with no extension, the lease is set to expire at the end of this year, but the team and the Maryland Stadium Authority can keep negotiating. Wednesday’s joint release seemed to be an attempt to calm any nerves in Baltimore about the team’s future.”
Why did they decline the extension of the lease?
Because they are interested in a project that goes well beyond just five years.
“On day O’s will decline 5-year lease extension in favor of negotiating long-term deal, per @NathanSRuiz, they issue joint statement with MD Gov. Moore declaring ‘commitment’ to ‘long-term, multi-decade, public-private partnership’ to ‘revitalize’ Camden Yards/area,” MLB reporter Chelsea Janes tweeted.

Basically, the Orioles want the power to make important decisions regarding their home ground for much, much longer than five years.
We will see how this pans out over the long haul, but the idea sounds excellent for fans.
They want a winning team on the field and happy fans in the stands.
