The Miami Marlins finally landed their new manager on Tuesday, hiring St. Louis Cardinals bench coach Skip Schumaker to fill the role after the departure of Don Mattingly.
But the Marlins’ leadership group appears to be getting even stronger.
Yesterday, it was announced that the Marlins would be hiring Houston Astros executive Oz Ocampo as their assistant general manager.
Ocampo has been around the game of baseball for 19 years.
He began his career as an executive with the Cardinals.
He has also worked with the Pittsburgh Pirates and in the Commissioner’s Office in the Dominican Republic and in New York.

Marlins Hire Ocampo
This is yet another solid hire by Marlins general manager Kim Ng.
Ocampo has been instrumental in finding young talent within the Astros’ system, such as Cristian Javier, Framber Valdez, Luis Garcia, and Jose Urquidy.
Ocampo began his career working in the Dominican Republic.
Ocampo served under Jeff Lunhow from 2005-09 while the latter was the scouting director for the Cardinals.
After two years as a specialist in international baseball operations, Ocampo joined the Astros staff.
His work in international baseball operations has earned him some healthy praise.
The hiring of Ocampo is a well-timed one as well.
His work in the Dominican Republic has paid dividends, and today, the Marlins will be opening a new academy there.
The Marlins finished 69-93 this past season and fell short of the postseason.
Ocampo is just the latest hire by general manager Kim Ng as the Marlins continue to build their front office and staff in an attempt to usher in a new era for the team.
