The Los Angeles Lakers might be heading into their most challenging and consequential period in recent history.
They had already been in a tough position, as they are the 12th team in the West and trying to avoid missing out on the postseason for the second year in a row.
But then came a new injury to LeBron James, which he encountered on Sunday afternoon.
If James misses a lot of time, the team’s chances could diminish in a major way.

NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski just announced that James’ right foot will be reassessed in two weeks to see how much progress he has made.
However, he will not be playing again in two weeks and the timeline for his return is expected to extend beyond that.
The bottom line is that we don’t know how long James will be out but he will be gone for at least several weeks.
And those weeks could be very disappointing for the Lakers – or perhaps very inspiring.
If Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, and the rest of the squad are able to come together and secure a string of wins, it will be a true testament to what the team has been slowly building over the last few years.
Additionally, a group of newcomers like Malik Beasley, Mo Bamba, D’Angelo Russell, and others could greatly add to the team’s success.
But James is a true force of nature and the centerpiece of the Lakers.
Losing him for an extended amount of time is almost always bad for them.
The Lakers already needed to fight hard to make the playoffs.
Now they will need to fight even harder.
