When discussing potential buyers, the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, and the Seattle Mariners often pop up in conversations.
However, it’s important to understand one thing to have a full grasp of the 2022 trade deadline dynamics: don’t sleep on the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cards, second in the NL Central with a 54-48 record, may be one star away from challenging for the division crown and a deep run in the playoffs.
That star could very well be Washington Nationals outfielder Juan Soto.
According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, there is growing belief in St. Louis that they are capable of bringing in a true impact player before tomorrow’s deadline.
“The #STLCards are one of @MLB’s most active teams, with a little more than 24 hours until the deadline. They’re well-positioned to land an impact starter and remain in the mix for Juan Soto. @MLBNetwork,” Morosi tweeted.

They Want Soto, But Have Other Desires And Needs
As you can see, their ambitions are not exclusively tied to Soto.
They also want a top starter and thus could go after someone like Carlos Rodon.
In any case, the Cards are ready to make a big splash.
They have several players they would be open to trading in the right situation: outfielders Dylan Carlson, Tyler O’Neill, and Harrison Bader, infielder Nolan Gorman, and prospects Matthew Liberatore and Jordan Walker, among others.
Obviously, they would rather not trade Walker, who projects as a potential star, but they could include him in talks for Soto.
Get ready for what is looking like the most exciting 24 hours in MLB this year.
