Nothing when right for the Denver Broncos during their 2022 NFL season.
After making a mega-trade for quarterback Russell Wilson, the team performance was worse than the previous season.
Under rookie head coach Nathaniel Hackett, the team suffered from horrible play-calling decisions.
Because of this, the team fired Hackett before the end of the season.
The move left the team without a proven head coach.
However, Ian Rapoport is reporting how the Broncos are meeting with Sean Payton this week.

Payton, who retired from coaching in 2022, is a Super Bowl champion coach from his time with the New Orleans Saints.
The Broncos feel he can bring this winning culture over to Denver with Wilson as the leading quarterback.
However, getting Payton will cost the team, as he’s still under contract with the Saints.
It won’t be until after the 2024 NFL season ends where Payton can freely accept any NFL team’s offer.
With the Broncos already giving up draft capital last year to get Wilson, they have little to work with this season.
While they don’t have their first-round pick, they have a first-round pick they got from the Miami Dolphins when they sent Bradley Chubb to them.
However, the Saints might not see this as enough compensation for Payton.
If this is the case, then the meeting the team will have with the former head coach will go nowhere.
They must buy-out the contract he currently has with the Saints.
So while the meeting is hopeful for fans of the Broncos, it’s the Saints who will make the final decision on Payton’s coaching future.
