To say that the Houston Texans were a disappointment would be a bit of a stretch.
Absolutely no one expected them to be a good team in 2022, and they were projected to get a top-3 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, so, technically, they did exactly what we thought they’d do.
Nonetheless, even when they won, they lost.
The Texans inexplicably tried to beat the Indianapolis Colts in a meaningless game that cost them the first-overall pick, a pick that would most definitely help them straighten the ship in the next couple of years.
That may have been just the excuse the Texans needed to fire HC Lovie Smith.
Smith left a lot to be desired in his first and lone year in charge of the team, but it’s not like he could’ve done much more with the hand that he had been given.
And now, finding someone who’s willing to fix that mess will be a complicated task, to say the least.
Even so, the Texans are swinging for the fences in their pursuit of a new head coach, as they’ve already interviewed former New Orleans Saints HC Sean Payton, according to Adam Schefter.
Texans completed an interview tonight with Sean Payton.

Payton is expected to be the most sought-after coach in the NFL this offseason, and he’s already been tied to the Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, and Los Angeles Chargers.
So, all things considered, it seems highly unlikely that coach Payton will want to come back from retirement to coach one of the worst-run organizations in the league.
