Anthony Rizzo has not been the same for quite some time.
The New York Yankees have also struggled quite a bit, falling to last place in the American League East.
However, there has been a noticeable decline in Rizzo’s production.
The veteran first baseman was placed on the 10-day injured list on Thursday due to concussion-related symptoms, which the Yankees believe can be traced back to a collision with Fernando Tatis Jr. on May 28.
On Twitter, Codify posted a comparison of Rizzo’s stats before and after the collision with Tatis, which shows just how much the collision affected him.
This is legitimately crazy.
Rizzo this year before this happened:
53 games, 11 HR, .304/.376/.505 (.880 OPS)Rizzo this year after this happened:
46 games, 1 HR, .172/.271/.225 (.496 OPS) https://t.co/l1jbLKPliG— Codify (@CodifyBaseball) August 3, 2023
Prior to the collision, Rizzo had hit 11 home runs and had a slash line of .304/.376/.505.
He also had an OPS of .880.
Since then, he has only hit one home run and has posted a slash line of .172/.271/.225 with an OPS of .496.
Rizzo was attempting to tag Tatis at first base after a pickoff throw and hit his head on Tatis’ hip as the San Diego Padres star was trying to get back to the bag.
Rizzo hadn’t gone on the injured list after this took place.
However, the stats he has posted since this happened prove that this may have negatively impacted the Yankees first baseman.
The Yankees have been in free-fall mode since the start of the second half, as they remain at the bottom of the AL East.
Losing Rizzo certainly won’t help matters as the Yankees try to pull themselves together and salvage the rest of the season.
