The Philadelphia Phillies are once again having a strong season.
After making the World Series last year the Phillies have put themselves in a position to do it again.
Even though they will not win the NL East, they are in good shape for the first Wild Card spot.
All it takes is to get hot at the right time to make a deep postseason run.
One spot on the Phillies that has been dominant this year is their pitching.
PhilliesNotes on Twitter mentioned how their pitching staff has the best fWAR in baseball this year.
Their 20.5 fWAR among pitchers is the best in the sport.
Phillies Starters:
756.1 IP (1st in NL/4th in MLB)
14.9 fWAR (1st in MLB)Phillies Relievers:
452.0 IP (30th in MLB)
5.6 fWAR (2nd in NL/4th in MLB)Starters and relievers combined:
20.5 fWAR (1st in MLB)— PhilliesNotes (@PhilliesNotes) September 4, 2023
fWAR stands for the FanGraphs version of Wins Above Replacement.
Pitching has always been the most important thing for a championship team.
The Phillies have an elite lineup and their bats can get hot at any time.
But, if they cannot continue to pitch at a high level then they will not go far.
Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler entered the year as the two aces of the Phillies staff.
Yet, they have not been their best pitchers this year.
The emergence of Cristopher Sanchez has been a pleasant surprise for the team.
He has made 13 starts and has a season ERA of 3.48.
Also, the Phillies have a ton of depth in their starting rotation.
They have six starters you can count on to start each week.
In the postseason, most teams try to shorten their rotation.
That will only help the Phillies bullpen by adding more strong arms to that unit.
It will be interesting to see how the Phillies perform over the last month and into the playoffs.
