After Dave Roberts made a comment that the National League West division was the best in all of baseball, many have spoken out against that claim, citing the American League East for being the toughest.
With four teams in the division that would qualify for the postseason if it began today, it’s hard to dispute the fact that the AL East is the toughest.
The only real argument you could make against it being the toughest is the fact that the New York Yankees lead it by 14 games.
But Talkin’ Yanks, a Yankees fan page tweeted a graphic showing the combined record of every MLB division, and the AL East is firmly at the top.

AL East Stronghold
With all due respect to Roberts, this chart here shows just how ridiculous his claim about the NL West being the best division truly is.
It’s certainly a good division, with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Diego Padres, and the San Francisco Giants all being in postseason contention, but you really can’t dispute the fact that it’s the AL East that is the toughest, even with the Yankees ahead by 14 games.
Again, this division would have four teams in the postseason if it began today, as the Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, and Toronto Blue Jays are all jockeying for Wild Card positions.
And let’s not forget about the Baltimore Orioles, who have come out of nowhere and are now just a game below the .500 mark.
Before too long, every team in this division could be .500 or better.
The NL West is a good division, but the AL East has to take the cake for the best in all of baseball.
