In the fourth inning of Japan’s first World Baseball Classic (WBC) game against China, they were up “just” 1-0.
Considering the notable difference in roster quality between the two teams, the fact that Japan was only up by a single run was a bit surprising.
That wasn’t going to last long, though.
Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani broke the game free with a two-run double that seemed out off the bat.
The 3-0 lead was more of a reflection of the difference between the two squads.
Welcome to the Sho! Ohtani with a 2-run double and Japan now leads 3-0!

In the end, Japan ended up prevailing 8-1, in large part thanks to Ohtani.
The MLB legend went 2-for-4 as a hitter, with a run, two RBI, and the double.
He also drew two walks, which means he got on base four times on the day.
Not that we needed any proof, but this shows that Ohtani can produce top-notch offensive numbers no matter the uniform he wears.
He did in the Nippon Professional Baseballl (NPB) prior to joining the Angels in 2018; he did it in LA with his club for years, and he is now doing it for Team Japan.
He is a true freak of nature.
But that wasn’t all: he also started the game for the “Samurai” and delivered four scoreless innings.
He only surrendered one hit, with no walks and five strikeouts.
It’s safe to say China didn’t represent much of a challenge for Ohtani.
His next start will probably come in the next round, should the Japanese make it that far.
His ferocious bat will be in the lineup in the meantime.
