With the 2022 NFL league year starting a little over a week from now, there are already reports regarding the players that will likely get the franchise tag.
The tag is a one-year, fully-guaranteed deal that is worth the average of the top five cap hits for the position during the previous season.
Teams often use it to buy time for contract negotiations with one of their key players.
A player can be placed under the tag for up to three consecutive seasons.
However, doing so can turn out to be expensive given the inflation for the second and third seasons.
The Kansas City Chiefs kicked off the tag talks by giving it to offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr., as ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter reported.
With the first domino falling, expect more reports regarding the tag in the coming days.
That said, Schefter revealed other players who might follow in Brown’s fate.
Other prime candidates to get the franchise tag by Tuesday’s 4 pm deadline include Packers WR Davante Adams, Bucs WR Chris Godwin, Chargers WR Mike Williams, Bengals S Jessie Bates III, Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz, Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki and Titans edge rusher Harold Landry III.

Schefter tweeted, “Other prime candidates to get the franchise tag by Tuesday’s 4 pm deadline include Packers WR Davante Adams, Bucs WR Chris Godwin, Chargers WR Mike Williams, Bengals S Jessie Bates III, Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz, Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki, and Titans edge rusher Harold Landry III.”
How Much Will The Franchise Tags For 2022 Be?
From the list that Schefter named, three are wide receivers who are heavy contributors for their respective teams.
Giving the tag to Adams, Godwin, and Williams will earn them $19 million in 2022.
Meanwhile, tight ends Schultz and Gesicki will get $11 million.
Bates had solid performances during the Cincinnati Bengals’ run to the Super Bowl and he will get $13 million.
Finally, outside linebacker Landry will be $18.5 million richer if the Titans give him the tag.
