The top head coach with NFL experience that was available this offseason was Sean Payton.
It seemed very likely that he was going to find a job, and that ended up happening with the Denver Broncos.
Payton interviewed with a plethora of teams, before deciding to sign with Denver.
But, there was one surprise team that was interested in Payton and that was the Washington Commanders.
Despite still having head coach Ron Rivera under contract, Washington is about to get a new ownership group.
Payton explained in an interview how one of the potential new owners reached out to Payton for his interest in coaching the Commanders.
"There were a lot of different things in play."
Sean Payton tells @AdamSchein there was interest from potential Commanders' ownership groups that reached out about him coaching in Washington D.C.

Payton has already coached the other three NFC East teams.
He was an assistant in Philadelphia, New York, and Dallas.
But, not having an ownership group in place was probably a non-starter for Payton.
He has no idea who will win the bid for the Commanders.
So finding a sure thing with a stable front office and owner in Denver seems like the right call.
Now Payton will be tasked with trying to fix Russell Wilson.
Denver was the most disappointing team in the NFL in 2022.
All because of how terrible Wilson and their offense performed.
Payton is one of the best offensive minds in NFL history, so he should have an idea of how to fix the offense.
Having to play in the AFC West will be difficult for Payton in his first year.
There will be no honeymoon period for him, his team is expected to compete for a playoff berth next year.
Denver will be one of the most interesting teams to follow next season.NEXT: Micah Parsons Reveals 1 Player The Cowboys Should Sign
