The Suns and Mercury owner announced that he has “started the process” to sell both franchises after a countless number of people, analysts, and players came forward demanding that he step down from his position.
This followed a report from the NBA about Sarver which found that he had repeatedly said racist and sexist comments and had performed offensive actions against his employees over the years.
Initially, the league fined him $10 million and suspended him from any activities for a year.
However, many people said that wasn’t enough and the public outcry about Sarver grew and grew, leading to this moment
Sarver is going to be leaving the Suns, but he doesn’t seem happy about it.
So Long, Sarver
Sarver’s announcement portrayed a man who is upset and feels forced to proceed with the sale.
“As a man of faith, I believe in atonement and the path to forgiveness,” Sarver said in his statement.
He continued, “I expected that the commissioner’s one-year suspension would provide the time for me to focus, make amends and remove my personal controversy from the teams that I and so many fans love.”
“But in our current unforgiving climate, it has become painfully clear that that is no longer possible — that whatever good I have done, or could still do, is outweighed by things I have said in the past. For those reasons, I am beginning the process of seeking buyers for the Suns and Mercury,” Sarver concluded.
Sarver might not be happy about giving up his team but he only has himself to blame.
The hunt for new owners should be interesting – and fast – as the Suns are one of the most promising squads in the NBA.
