The San Antonio Spurs need to be extremely cautious with their new star.
Victor Wembanyama is a kind of talent we have never seen before in the league, and they’ll need to bring him in slowly to put him in a position to fulfill his potential.
That means he’ll have to soak in a lot of information and incorporate some moves and habits from former greats of the game.
With that in mind, Wembanyama and his agent — who has repeatedly talked about mimicking his game to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s — have made it a point of emphasis to develop a skyhook.
That’s why former NBA champion Richard Jefferson believes the No. 1 pick is right on track to find success, as he should try and take a lot of pages out of Kareem’s book.
Jefferson points out that Wembanyama isn’t going to be a bruiser or a physical presence like David Robinson or Shaquille O’Neal, and he might be even slightly more athletic than Kareem, so it’s only perfect and natural to see that he’s trying to replicate what he did.
Wembanyama had already shown some touch with the rock on his hand, and Kareem’s skyhook was both uncontestable and unstoppable.
Dominating that shot and being able to shoot it at a high clip won’t be an easy task, but adding that move to his repertoire won’t only allow Wembanyama to be efficient and effective away from the basket, but it would also make him an even more enticing and unique offensive player.
