You don’t see a no-hitter every day.
That’s why MLB decided to reward a historic performance by Los Angeles Angels left-hander Reid Detmers with the Player of the Week award in the American League.
Detmers took the ball last Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays and did nothing but dominate from start to finish.
Yes, he only logged two strikeouts, but his control, command, and poise were masterful: he ended up pitching the whole nine innings with no hits or runs allowed, and only one walk.
The outing was enough to lower his high ERA all the way down to a more decent 3.77.
The Rays have a sneaky good offense, and Detmers shut it down completely for a night.
“Congratulations to the newest A.L. Player of the Week, @RDetmers!” the Angels official Twitter account said.

Detmers Is Now A Top Pitcher In The Angels Rotation
Just one year ago, Detmers was making his professional debut after missing the whole 2020 campaign thanks to the pandemic.
He breezed through Double-A and Triple-A, only to find some struggles in the majors (7.40 ERA in 20.1 innings).
This time, however, he seems more mature on the mound, and his velocity ticked up.
He looks better and nastier as a result, and his stuff is the perfect evidence.
He is now an important contributor for one of the hottest teams in the American League, one that surprisingly leads the AL West division over the likes of the Houston Astros and the Seattle Mariners.
For a night, Detmers was impossible to hit, and that earned MLB’s award for the best player in the past week.
Hopefully, it’s the first of many for the talented left-hander.
