The New York Mets may need to search for some relief pitching help at the trade deadline this season after Edwin Diaz suffered a knee injury in the World Baseball Classic.
The injury will ultimately cost Diaz the entire 2023 season.
As the veteran closer was taken off the field at loanDepot Park in a wheelchair, his younger brother, Cincinnati Reds reliever Alexis Diaz, was in tears.
Some have gone as far as to speculate that the Mets may try to acquire the right-hander from the Reds.
However, this has not been the case, at least as of now.
According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, Reds GM Nick Krall has said that the Mets have not inquired about the young right-hander.
Nick Krall #Reds GM, just told us that #Mets GM Billy Eppler has not called him yet to inquire about the availability of Edwin Diaz's brother and Reds back-end reliever Alexis Diaz. #FYI

The Mets may end up making an attempt to acquire Diaz from the Reds at the trade deadline.
The Reds are not expected to be in contention at any point this season, while the Mets are expected to be a clear World Series contender.
And so, the fit is there and a deal could come to fruition by the time of the trade deadline.
However, as of now, the Mets have not made an attempt to acquire the Reds righty.
With the season not starting until the end of next week, it may be a little bit early for the Mets to be asking around about other relievers.
They do have some solid options in Adam Ottavino and David Robertson, both of whom have been closers in years past.
