3 Reasons Kyler Murray Deserves A New Deal Now

The 2022 NFL offseason is seeing quarterbacks getting huge contract deals.

Deshaun Watson in Cleveland signed a five-year deal worth $230 million in fully guaranteed money.

Green Bay extended the contract of Aaron Rodgers, paying him an average of $50 million a year.

Even Kirk Cousins signed a sweet one-year extension worth $35 million in fully guaranteed money.

With these quarterbacks getting their money, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray wants his money as well.

Some people feel Murray doesn’t deserve a big contract like those other players got.

Others feel like he’s deserving of a new contract.

However, there are three reasons Murray deserves a new deal now with Arizona.

3. Paying Him Now Could Save The Cardinals Later

With the slate of quarterbacks due for a new contract in 2023, signing Murray now helps the Cardinals.

It also gives Murray what he desires right now, a new deal.

When you examine the quarterbacks set to be free agents in 2023, you see some big names.

Tom Brady, Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Nick Foles are on that 2023 list.

We know Brady and Jackson can get whatever they desire from any NFL team.

Those two becoming free agents in 2023 would complicate things for Arizona if they wait until 2023 with Murray.

If they wait, the price might go up for them.

With an increased price tag, the team might move on from him, which could lead to the team suffering in 2023.

2. Murray Had MVP-Like Numbers Before His Injury

The 2021 season started with talk about Murray taking the MVP for the season.

However, an injury would end his run for that title.

Let’s not forget Kyler Murray was the top MVP candidate going into week 8 before he got hurt against Green Bay. PAY HIM.

But he started the season hot with a 7-0 record.

His ability on the field shows he’s an MVP candidate when healthy.

During those seven wins, he passed for 2,002 yards and 17 touchdowns.

So when Murray plays at 100%, he shows why people thought of him as an MVP candidate.

However, for him to be deserving of a new contract, he needs another season like 2021, minus the injury.

But the showing of an MVP season at the start of 2021 is evidence enough that he deserves a new contract.

He needs to show the Cardinals he’s still an MVP-worthy candidate in 2022.

1. Showing Improvement With Arizona

The biggest thing in Murray’s favor is his season numbers improving over each year.

The team added players to help him improve on the field, and he took advantage of those weapons.

2022 gives him a shot to continue to improve with the team.

However, he also needs to improve his leadership abilities.

While the on-field performance is getting better, leadership also needs to follow suit.

If he shows the team leadership capabilities, they would have their best reason to give Murray that deal he desires.

However, that leadership could take time and better coaching.

But some progression with him is a win for Arizona, and they have slowly gotten that progression.
