The Los Angeles Rams suffered a huge blow in the form of a season-ending injury to safety Jordan Fuller.
That left a huge void on defense ahead of the Wild Card matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.
Los Angeles thus needed a replacement and found some depth in the form of a familiar face.
Eric Weddle played for the Rams in 2019, the last season before he announced his retirement.
Now, he returns to LA out of retirement with a chance to compete for a Super Bowl and play in a defense he knows extremely well. https://t.co/mHB8ByTjNU

The Rams are signing safety Eric Weddle, who has been retired since the conclusion of the 2019 season.
He spent that year with the Rams and started all 16 games in what was a nice send-off season.
Yet he is returning at the age of 37 in the pursuit of a Super Bowl.
A Surprising Addition In Los Angeles
Weddle’s name may never have come up on a list of potential replacements for Fuller.
But the postseason is here and the Rams needed someone reliable.
Weddle is just that and was still playing at a high level when he retired following the 2019 season.
He is a five-time All-Pro and made the Pro Bowl as recently as the 2018 season.

How much Weddle plays remains to be seen.
His return in general is just exciting and proves that veteran players may be sitting and waiting for one final opportunity, even if they have previously announced their retirement.
So can Weddle replace Fuller?
That will be tough to do at his age, but he can at least provide experience that is unmatched on the roster.
Landing one of the best safeties of the era right before the biggest game of the season is a nice boost for a Rams team that lost in Week 18 against the San Francisco 49ers.
Perhaps Weddle can show up and inspire the team so he can officially retire as a champion.
