The New York Yankees may have won last night over the Boston Red Sox, being carried by home runs from Josh Donaldson and Aaron Hicks.
But that didn’t change the fact that Gerrit Cole continues to have immense struggles against Red Sox third baseman and slugger Rafael Devers.
Though Cole went six innings and picked up win No. 8 on the season, he still allowed five runs, all of which came on both home runs hit by Devers last night.
New York held on by a final of 6-5.
After the game, Yankees writer Bryan Hoch tweeted a list of players who have the most home runs off of Gerrit Cole during their careers.
Devers was at the top with six.
Most career HRs vs. Gerrit Cole:
Rafael Devers 6
Matt Carpenter 4
Joey Gallo 4
Ji-Man Choi 4— Bryan Hoch (@BryanHoch) July 8, 2022
Devers Continues To Dominate Cole
Sometimes, you just have a guy’s number, or vice versa.
In Cole’s case, he has been unable to get Devers out.
Devers is just locked in against him.
Sometimes, there’s no explanation for it.
It’s just the way things work in baseball sometimes.
But Devers has really owned Cole.
The funny thing about that list is that two of the players who appear on that list, Joey Gallo and Matt Carpenter, are now teammates of Cole’s.
But back to Devers, who is having a tremendous season and likely will end up being the starter at third base for the American League All-Stars, when the voting results are revealed later today.
Anytime you can hit that many home runs against a guy like Cole, you know you’re doing something right.
Devers clearly has Cole’s number and is able to find his weak spot easily.
Baseball ebbs and flows.
We’ll see if Cole can ever overcome his nemesis.
