Pete Alonso had himself a huge day on Sunday as the New York Mets blew out the Oakland Athletics and moved their magic number to clinch the NL East down to eight.
With a two-run home run in the top of the fifth, Alonso officially set the Mets’ single-season record for RBI, a record which was previously held by Mike Piazza.
That home run gave him RBI No. 124 and 125, and he picked up three more on a bases-clearing double later in the game, which puts his total at 128 for the season.
After the home run, the Mets put out a tweet celebrating Alonso’s accomplishment.

Alonso Sets RBI Record
Obviously, Alonso is no stranger to setting all-time records.
He did that for home runs in his rookie season of 2019 on his way to winning the NL Rookie of the Year Award.
But now, he’s the Mets’ single-season RBI king, setting a new record.
Alonso has had a banner season thus far.
He had four hits on Sunday afternoon and five total RBI.
Alonso is hitting .270 with 39 homers in 574 at bats in addition to his 128 RBI.
He’s also posted an OPS of .870.
The Polar Bear has done a little bit of everything with the Mets during the early stages of his career and may have a shot at winning the NL MVP Award when the season is over.
He’ll have stiff competition with Paul Goldschmidt and Kyle Schwarber, but he does have a pretty good chance.
Those 128 RBI should count for something.
We’ll see if he has more left in the tank.
The Mets are really going to need him this week if they want to wrap up the NL East race.
