New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso is, according to his own testimony, fortunate to be alive.
Speaking with the media in Florida from the Mets’ training camp, Alonso said he was in a car accident.
We will let Mets beat writer for MLB.com Anthony DiComo tell us the details: “Pete Alonso says he got in a ‘brutal’ car accident yesterday. His car flipped over three times. He says he feels fortunate to be alive. He is well now and will be back to the field tomorrow,” DiComo tweeted.

There are no reports from the Mets regarding any unwanted effects from the accident, so the plan is to have him back in the field tomorrow unless something changes.

The Heart And Soul Of The Mets
In the last couple of years, Alonso has developed not only into one of the best power-hitting first basemen in the league, but also into the heart and soul of the roster.
New York fans absolutely love him, because he is charismatic, honest, and always gives everything he has on the field.
Fortunately, he has no consequences of the accident, and can resume his preparations for the upcoming season.
Alonso is a big part of the Mets’ lineup as a middle-of-the-order masher.
Last season, he slashed .262/.344/.519 with 37 home runs, 81 runs scored, and 94 RBI.
The Mets are still considering the possibility of bringing in a first baseman, specifically Freddie Freeman, in which case Alonso would be the designated hitter.
In any case, it doesn’t really matter: Alonso is expected to play, and much of the Mets’ playoff hopes rest on his potent right-handed bat.
